Autothermal-Pyrolysis Technology for Waste Management

About Solution

Indonesia Palm Oil Mill produces empty fruit bunch (EFB) waste in the amount of 31 million tons per year increasing 61.38 million tons of CO2 and 2.39 million tons of CH4 greenhouse gas emission. REEN (Renewable Energy and Environment), pursues a vision of enhancing a sustainable world by creating renewable energy and environmentally friendly of high-value products and services. Thus, mitigating the emission by implementing a technology called autothermal-pyrolysis allows processing the EFB into charcoal pellets (charlet). Due to the national, regional, and global growing market of bio-pellet, charlet has several competitive advantages to stand out over the similar existing products. Charlet poses a calorific value of 25 MJ/kg which is almost the same with coal. The self-sufficient energy of the technology implementation does not need any additional fuel making the process environmentally friendly. Moreover, the uniform shape, low water content, and high density favor the storing, packaging, and distributing process. The operation of the project is responsible for the team with COO that has operated a startup company previously and the rest members and mentors who are strengthening the part of the research and TESOL feasibility study and analysis. REEN team is facing a challenge of upscaling the technology to a standardized industry scale for charlet production as well as the financial. The investment with a total of USD 29394.68 would be possibly used to develop the pilot operation. The first pilot operation is projected to reach 792 tons/year production of charlet that will be distributed to the primary segment of customers, MSMEs and steam power plants in Indonesia. REEN has projected for the successful implementation of the pilot operation, the BEP will be accomplished for 192 days after production. The beneficiaries of the implementation are various ranging from environment, social, and economic aspects. As many as 132000 tons of EFB, 261360 tons of CO2 and 10164 tons of CH4 can be reduced each year. Ultimately, the unemployment of the local area could be reduced to about 13.03% per implementation project.
